The Motley
Continuing the Legacy of Creators Before Us

The Motley is a unique, heritage-inspired hotel that revives the spirit of the 1800s rag trade through eclectic design and craftsmanship.

Originally started as branding project for an existing hotel group, but through a strong creative partnership it became clear this was an opportunity to create something unique.

At the heart of historic Bridge Road, The Motley’s location dates back to 1837 as a heritage area of Melbourne’s rag trade. The site was once occupied by costumier ‘Ms. Mary Parker’ and Melbourne’s busiest drapers, tailors, and makers of the late 1800s. Our task was to bring the spirit of artistry and craftsmanship back to life, and continue the legacy of creators before us.

Within close proximity to iconic sporting arenas and cultural landmarks, The Motley stands in stark contrast to the business hotels of the area. The brand reflects its eclectic interiors and rich history to create experiences like no other. Branding of the hotel, restaurant, and cocktail bar draw inspiration from the site’s heritage—from sewn business cards, themed rooms, and an 18-metre mural—the brand concept was integrated into every facet of the experience.

The Motley opened in record time and received an incredible reception from national media and corporate partnerships—as well as high occupancy rates ahead of its official launch.

Studio Payne also developed identities for the hotel restaurant and bar terrace. Threads Rooftop Bar, is designed as a city retreat that blends elegance with luxurious materials sourced from across the globe. The Ms Parker restaurant is centred on the lore of a costumier who previously owned the building—drawing inspiration from the fabrics and needlework that once decorated the space.
